A bit of a downer today, as it’s the 20th anniversary of the disappearance of Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers. They were one of the most important bands to me as a teenager, and this quote from Kurt Vonnegut, talking about why he writes, sums up why, better than I ever could.
Still and all, why bother? Here’s my answer: Many people need desperately to receive this message: “I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people don’t care about them. You are not alone.”
Given the Manics propensity for quoting literature in their sleeves, I think it’s fitting. I was an angry young man (indeed, when I look at the world today, I may still be an angry older man), and Richey’s lyrics were, to me, a sign I may not be alone in this.
So thanks, wherever you may be, for those first three albums. Even now I feel less alienated and odd whenever I hear them.
Here’s this week’s songs, led out by an absolutely amazing track from Generation Terrorists. Today’s theme is duets, and this is a brilliant on, a feminist duet with former adult actress Traci Lords.
Next up, Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel, and Don’t Give Up.
This needs to cheer up some, so here are Kimya Dawson and Adam Green, as The Moldy Peaches, being filthy.
Followed by Scotland’s finest, The Vaselines.
And finally, to drag the mood down a little, Thom Yorke of Radiohead, and Björk Gudmundsdottir of The Sugarcubes, with I’ve Seen It All from the marvellously bleak film, Dancer in the Dark.
